Figure 1. Images of encapsulated gram positive marine bacteria isolate APP-632 stained with SYTO-9 and PI. Photomicrographs were taken at time zero (To), 3 hr, 6 hr, and 12 hr after initiation of incubation. Neither unstained bacteria nor fluorescence could be detected at To. After 3 hr of incubation, however, small microcolonies of cocci-like tetrads were detected in GMDs. After longer incubation periods of 6 hr and 12 hr, larger microcolonies were detected. After 24 hr, however, the microcolonies became smaller but denser and more refractory. After 48-96 hr, many of the GMDs had ruptured, releasing microorganisms into the medium.
